They both perform a similar role – creating a protective barrier on the skin – but why should you use one over another?Here are a few reasons:Beeswax and berry wax are both truly natural ingredients. They do not need intensive industrial processing, like paraffin, which causes harm to the environment.Beeswax and berry wax are both renewable resources, whereas the mining of fossil fuels cannot be reversed.Beeswax and berry wax nourish the skin whilst protecting it, whereas petrochemicals create a clingfilm-like barrier that prevents the skin from breathing.Beeswax and berry wax rarely cause irritation to the skin, whereas mineral oils (a form of petrochemical) are a common cause of break outs.Beeswax can be certified organic (which is what we use in our natural skin care products) whereas petrochemicals never will be. Levels of the substance are supposed to be lower in clothes to be worn close to the skin, but appear to have been included at a level that caused skin rashes in substantial numbers of people.As well as causing skin irritation and allergic reactions, formaldehyde is also recognised as being potentially carcinogenic for those with long term exposure.The issue has now prompted a toxics expert to call for safer chemicals to be introduced as an alternative to formaldehyde in clothing.However, this chemical is also used as a preservative in some make up and some skin care products. Ingredients such as DEA and TEA – found in a wide range of cosmetics – release small amounts of formaldehyde, which may cause skin reactions.Because of the potential health risks and allergies that people experience, at Green People we do not use formaldehyde or ingredients that may release formaldehyde in any of our products.We prefer to use safe ingredients that are gentle on the skin and derived from natural plant sources wherever possible. A recent feature in the news again drew attention to some of the potentially toxic chemicals that we regularly come into contact with, as well as the health effects they have been linked with.Many of those listed were ingredients found in beauty products or their packaging. These give particular cause for concern because up to 60% of substances applied to the skin may be absorbed and go directly into the bloodstream.The feature identified parabens, Sodium lauryl sulphate, phthalates and aluminium as having a potentially toxic effect on the body; all ingredients that Green People has recognised as worth avoiding ever since we started creating skin care products.More research is needed into these ingredients in order for us to understand fully the effects that they have on the body but we believe that there is no need to use them in deodorants, skin creams and other toiletries when there are safe, natural alternatives available.We avoid all questionable synthetic ingredients and instead prefer to use essential oils, plant extracts and other natural ingredients with beneficial effects such as skin nourishment, hydration or wrinkle reduction.We are very conscious that many of our customers are concerned about the same issues that we are – what goes into their beauty products – so we are completely up from about all the ingredients in Green People products.See our natural skin care products now. Proper exfoliation can have a profound effect on your skin. Dry brush exfoliation is by far the best for your skin, as it removes dead skin cells, improves lymph node function, and increases blood circulation. Dry brush exfoliation also stimulates detoxification. As your skin is your largest organ, the state of your skin can provide a lot of information about the state of your health.Your diet also plays a significant role in the health of your skin.
