The amount of organically farmed land across Europe has risen by 76% in the last decade, according to figures just released by the European Commission.It now accounts for around 4% of the total farmed land across the EU, with Spain having the greatest amount of organic farmland (1.13m hectares) and Austria having the greatest percentage of organic cultivated land (15%).The UK has the 4th largest area of organically farmed land, at 0.72m and has one of the largest markets for organic food. The UK and Italy are the two largest producers of organic sheep – together making up 52% of the EU’s production with a total of 1.7m sheep.Organic cereals account for most of the farming on pesticide free land, followed by organic vegetables and then organic cattle.
